Drain Cleaning

What Causes Clogged Drains and How to Prevent Them

A clogged drain is almost always the end of a process rather than an event. Understanding what accumulates in each type of line makes it much easier to prevent the next blockage.

Kitchen lines: grease first, everything else second

Warm fats and oils pour easily and then cool inside the pipe, coating the wall. Once that layer exists, food particles and coffee grounds stick to it. Scraping plates into the bin and wiping pans before washing removes most of what causes kitchen clogs.

Bathroom lines: hair bound with soap

Hair collects against the pipe wall and soap residue binds it into a mass that catches everything after it. A simple strainer over the shower and tub opening prevents a surprising proportion of bathroom blockages.

Basement drains: sediment and disuse

Floor drains sit unused for long stretches, which lets sediment settle and traps dry out. Running water into them occasionally keeps the trap sealed against odour and shows whether the line still drains freely.

When prevention is not enough

If the same drain blocks repeatedly despite good habits, the cause is usually the condition of the pipe or a problem further along the line — not what is going down the opening.
