Signs of a Damaged Plumbing Pipe

Pipes usually give warning before they fail outright. Recognising the signals is what turns an emergency into a scheduled repair.

Deposits and staining at joints

Green or white crusting on a fitting, or rust marks running below it, indicate water has been escaping slowly and evaporating for some time.

Repeat pinhole leaks

One pinhole is a repair. A second one on the same run within a few months is a statement about the condition of the whole length.

Discoloured water or flakes

Rust-tinted water after a period of non-use, or particles at an aerator, can point to corrosion inside the supply pipework.

Noise and movement

Knocking or banging when a tap closes, or a pipe that visibly shifts in use, means the run is unsupported — over time that movement stresses joints until one of them leaks.
